I was dreamin’ when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray

I’ve never seen this. This awesome. I love Prince. LOVE.

I’ll never forget the first time I heard him.  It was 1982.  I was 10 years old.  I was up in my room listening to the radio and dancing around while the song “Controversy” was playing. I loved the beat and groove of it. My mom came into the room and asked me what I was listening to.  I think it was after just about 30 seconds of listening to the lyrics that she turned the radio off and told me she didn’t want me listening to that music ever again.  Well, that of course did nothing but make me more interested.  Later that year, 1999 was released, and I was hooked.  I’d listen to the pop station with my Walkman and headphones and wait, very impatiently, mind you, for “Little Red Corvette” to come on, then jam out like crazy.

Then, of course, came Purple Rain.  Oh man!  By that time, my parents were pretty much not paying as much attention to what I was listening to.  Either that, or they knew, but decided I was able to compartmentalize it or something.  Either way, I still remember going over to the Salem Mall and picking up the poster of him sitting on the back of the purple motorcycle in the alley behind First Avenue, looking like a complete bad a$$.

From there on out, I’d pick his albums out the very day they were released, and listen to them over and over and over again.  Even the ones that weren’t GREAT were still really, really good.  The rich production, the guitar work, the funky rhythms.  I loved it all.  Still do.

Prince is the one artist that I will always unashamedly say I am a complete fan of.  I even got made fun of at times for it because people say he’s so “weird.”  I’ve found that most artistic people are.  I definitely am.  :)
